CARING FOR A DOG

Dog owners are responsible for feeding, housebreaking, and cleaning their
pets. They should also oversee the health of their dogs. It's best to consult a
veterinarian at the first sign of a dog ailment.

A dog can be fed either the dry meal, biscuit, semimoist and
cellophane-wrapped, or canned type of dog food. Whichever type is selected must
contain the carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals, and vitamins essential for
the animal's well-being. As a rule, the cost of feeding a large dog can be kept
low by giving it the inexpensive dry meal type.dog6.jpg (26267 bytes)

A puppy should be housebroken as soon as possible. When the puppy takes its
first water or food, note how long it takes for the puppy to urinate or
defecate. When you discover the schedule, take the pup outside when the
prescribed time has elapsed after feeding or drinking. Soon, the puppy will
associate the outdoors with toilet function and will no longer soil the house or
the newspapers that have been spread around its living area.

Young puppies should not be excessively groomed. A daily brushing with a soft
brush is sufficient to remove surface dust and dirt. Some authorities believe
that to conserve its natural skin oils a pup should not be completely bathed
until its first birthday. Mud and deep dirt in its coat, however, can be removed
with a damp, warm washrag. Afterward, the puppy should be completely dried with
a rough towel. A dog can then have a complete bath when it is old enough, but it
must be kept in the house until thoroughly dry, especially during winter. Dog
nails should be trimmed periodically. Cut only the transparent part of the nail
past the foot pads. Close clipping can cut into the "quick"--the portion of nail
that has nerves and blood vessels--and hurt the animal. Special clippers can be
purchased for trimming dog nails.

CHOOSING A DOG

An important thing to consider when buying a dog is whether it will fit
comfortably into your quarters when it reaches adult size. The presence of young
children in the family should also be a factor in selection. A dog for a growing
family must be able to stand rough treatment. A toy dog would be a poor choice
for such a family because its tiny bones are fragile enough to break when
children handle it roughly. In general larger dogs, such as Labrador retrievers
or German shepherds, are better adapted both physically and temperamentally for
a young family.

A dog can be acquired from a number of sources. It can be bought from a
reputable pet shop or from a kennel. Newspaper advertisements describe pups for
sale from private parties. Local humane societies have dogs available, too. From
whatever source you get a dog, however, make certain it is healthy. Ask for
proof, if possible, that it has received all the necessary immunizing shots.

It is also advisable to get a written reminder of whatever shots and other
care the pup will need after you take it home. Even if a puppy has had shots
against distemper and hepatitis, it will need booster shots. Later, it will need
a rabies shot. A reputable pet shop or kennel ordinarily will have taken care of
these details, but get a signed verification from a veterinarian anyway.dog5.jpg (37485 bytes)

Males are usually larger, stronger, and more aggressive, and they make
excellent watchdogs. On the other hand, females are usually more affectionate
and gentle, and if they are purebred dogs and are mated with males of their
breed, their pups can be sold for profit. The female has a strong maternal
instinct and will guard children as well as she does her own pups. Dogs of
either sex, however, can be neutered. Castration, the removal of the testes,
makes a male dog infertile and more docile. Spaying, or removal of the ovaries,
makes a female dog infertile.

Should one buy a purebred or a mongrel? This question is hard to answer
because a purebred dog sometimes turns out to be less desirable than expected,
while a mongrel often makes an alert, intelligent, and delightful family pet.

As a rule, a purebred pup inherits the traits of its breed. As a result, few
surprises in body form and temperament arise when the pup reaches adulthood. If
you want to buy a purebred but are unfamiliar with the breed, first look at a
full-grown dog of the breed. The puppy will grow to resemble it. If you want to
buy a mongrel, try to see its sire and dam. The sire and dam will display any
unwanted trait that may lie hidden in the puppy.

Ideally, children and puppies should grow up together. Caution should be
taken, however, when dog owners bring a newborn baby home. Pampered dogs
sometimes resent the newcomer because the baby receives most of the parents'
attention. They should make an effort to pay attention to the dog, too.

A puppy should be at least eight or nine weeks old before it is taken from
its home kennel. By this time it will have been weaned and eating regular food.
At first, the puppy must be fed four times a day. By the time it is mature,
feedings should be down to twice a day or even once a day in the case of a dog
that gets little exercise. Diet and feeding instructions should accompany the
puppy. If it was eating a prepared dog food at the kennel, the same diet should
be maintained until the puppy shows its dislike of it by "going off its feed,"
or refusing to eat. Several types of dog food may have to be tried before the
dog settles on a favorite. If it refuses all the choices offered, however,
consult the breeder or a veterinarian for help.

THE DOG

The dog is one of the most popular pets in the world. It ordinarily remains loyal to a considerate master, and because of this the dog has been called man's best friend. Class distinctions between people have no part in a dog's life. It can be a faithful companion to either rich or poor.
Dogs have been domesticated for most of human history and have thus endeared themselves to many over the years. Stories have been told about brave dogs that served admirably in war or that risked their lives to save persons in danger. When Pompeii--the Roman community destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79--was finally excavated, searchers found evidence of a dog lying across a child, apparently trying to protect the youngster. Perhaps few of the millions of dogs in the world may be so heroic, but they are still a source of genuine delight to their owners.
A dog fits easily into family life. It thrives on praise and affection. When a master tells a dog that it is good, the animal happily wags its tail. But when a master scolds a dog, it skulks away with a sheepish look and with its tail tucked between its legs.
People in the city as well as those in other areas can enjoy a dog. Medium-size or small dogs are best suited for the confines of the city. Large dogs need considerable exercise over a large area.
Dogs are not always well thought of, however. In recent years dogs in the city have been in the center of controversy. Some people have criticized dog owners for allowing their pets to soil sidewalks and lawns, although in some cities laws oblige owners to walk their dogs along street curbs. In turn, dog owners have argued that the animals serve as protection against vandals and burglars and thus protect their detractors as well as their owners.
When a person decides to own a dog, he should be prepared to care for it properly. For a dog to stay healthy it must be correctly fed and adequately groomed, and its medical needs must be met. For a dog to be well-mannered it must be properly trained. It should never be ill-treated or mishandled. Otherwise, it will bite in its own defense.
The wild ancestors of all dogs were hunters. Wolves and other wild relatives of the dog still hunt in packs for their food. Dogs have retained the urge to be with the pack. This is why they do not like to be left alone for long. Some breeds of dogs still retain the hunting instinct.
Dogs exist in a wide range of sizes, colors, and temperaments. Some, such as the Doberman pinscher and the German shepherd, serve as alert and aggressive watchdogs. Others, such as the beagle and the cocker spaniel, are playful family pets, even though they were bred for hunting. Still others, such as the collie and the Welsh corgi, can herd farm or range animals. Each of the dogs just mentioned is a purebred. A mongrel dog, however--one with many breeds in its background--can just as easily fit into family life.
Dogs have been with humans since prehistoric times. Over the years they have performed various services. They have pulled sleds over snowy tracts. They have delivered messages, herded sheep and cattle, and even rescued persons trapped in the snow. Dogs have served as a source of food, too. The ancient Romans are said to have prized certain kinds of dog stew. The Aztecs of ancient Mexico raised tiny dogs, thought to be the forebears of the chihuahua, to feed the large carnivores in the private zoos of the Aztec rulers. In the past dogs have even been worshiped as gods. Recently, they have been used in drug research, medical experimentation, and space science. Soviet scientists launched dogs into space to test the ability of mammals to survive the rigors of space travel before people were sent up.
Dogs are trained as guard dogs in peacetime by the United States Army and other military services. Because of their keen sense of smell, dogs are used by police at times to track down escaped prisoners. Law enforcement agencies also rely on the dog's acute sense of smell to uncover illegal drugs. And specially trained dogs serve as the "eyes" of the blind, guiding the steps of their sightless masters around obstacles and hazards.

How To Buy A Laptop - 5 Basic Steps to the Right Laptop For You

By Roger DeReu

You've decided to buy a laptop, but don't really know how to go about it.
I get asked time and again how to buy a laptop. Sometimes it's for a student, other times for an adult who just wants the freedom to roam around the house while computing.
So I have come up with a short procedure to follow that will act as a guide to get the right product for the right purpose.
Step 1: Determine who is going to use it. Not just the individual, but is this person - old or young (need reading glasses yet)? Computer literate or illiterate (PC or MAC)? A person who takes care of his hardware or someone careless?
Once I had a client who was blind and looking for a laptop. At the time, Toshiba had the best name in the business. We called a techy type guy who worked for an association for the blind who was also sight impaired.
His comment to us was that blind people can be a bit harder on things, for obvious reasons, and that Toshiba laptops don't hold up quite as well to being banged around. He recommended some other brands instead.
Experience has also shown me that college students who don't have to buy their own laptop have a distinct tendency to be harder on things also. Make sure they have a well padded case and use it.
The answers derived in Step 1 will trickle down to the rest of the 5 steps, as you will see.
Step 2: How long does this person need it for? Is it a student going to college and you, the parent, want it to last for the entire 4 year program (hopefully they'll finish in 4 years!)?. If so, you want enough performance and warranty to last that long.
On the other hand, maybe you are buying for someone with plenty of money who likes the latest and greatest. (Is there a doctor in the house?) In that case, put money into power and toys, not lengthy warranty.
If it's for an election worker, the laptop is probably not needed for more than a year or so, two at the most. Configure it accordingly.
Step 3: Determine the ergonomics. This is about the only use I have for big box stores. Wander the aisles and try out the different pointing devices and keyboards. Decide if you want widescreen or standard aspect ratio (standard is getting harder to find).
Do you like the glossy screen or will glare be a big problem where you are likely to use it most? Maybe you prefer matte finish. Glossy looks a little sharper for movies and Windows Vista Aero interface, and to see if someone is sneaking up behind you. But if you have an office with lots of windows or flourescent lights, matte may be better for you.
If you will be using the laptop outside a lot, you may want to try out some laptops - from friends or coworkers - in that environment. It's no fun if you can't read the screen.
Size and Weight. Does it need to be compact or light? Some very nice units weigh in at under 4 pounds yet have a large enough keyboard and screen to be quite usable.
A typical high powered laptop will run around 6.5 pounds. But a laptop with a behemoth 17" screen tips the scale at almost 10 pounds!
Step 4: What kind of support will you need for it? Are you the type that just isn't comfortable talking to support staff in India, and would rather walk up to a counter with a live (even if disinterested) human being?
Or are you self sufficient enough to handle simple things on your own, maybe even get out a screwdriver and start prying the keyboard off if directed to?
Buy a laptop from a vendor who will give the kind of support that you require.
Step 5: Do you have budget constraints? If so, you may want to reference my article on "How to Buy a Laptop - 7 Areas to Cut Costs". Otherwise, you can skip right to my Laptop Buying Guide and see exactly what kind of system I recommend for the best price/performance purchase.
Do your research when buying a laptop. Do everything you can to help insure that you will be happy with it.
But, just in case, check out the return policy if you find that you really didn't get what you expected.

Each insurance company provides different levels of cover, but specific landlord property insurances in the UK offers you two options that are tailor made for landlords. Building cover is a standard cover of the building and its contents for the following:

Tips on Getting Your House Insurance Right

By Jason Hulott

There are many different types of packages when it comes to home insurance and it can be difficult to choose which type of cover and package to go for. Insurance can cover fire, theft and even liability, however there are many exclusions within policies and you should make sure that you read the small print. To help you here are some tips to get you started.
Make sure that you correctly value the contents of your home. If you are going for a new for old policy then make sure that you value your items at the price it would cost you to buy those items now, not how much you paid for them when you bought them.
If you have expensive items such as computer equipment, mountain bikes or family heirlooms then these won’t usually be included in the cover so don’t automatically think that they are, these will have to be added on as extras to your policy.
You can get cheaper insurance by making sure that your home is secure. Installing mortise locks and deadlocks can cut down the cost of your premiums as can installing security lighting around the outside of your home. It is worthwhile checking the small print of your policy because some policies state that these have to be in place and if not then your claim might not be paid.
Make sure that you keep written documentation of the value of the items in your home and whenever you make new purchases add them to the list to keep it up to date. It can be surprising how things mount up if you don’t care and you could soon find you have greatly underestimated the value of your possessions.
When looking to purchase your policy you should always shop around for the best deal. When it comes to buying insurance you can get the cheapest premiums online. Doing a simple search from one of the popular search engines will reveal hundreds of online insurance companies all competing to give you the best deal.

Tips For Healthier Skin

By Tyler Powers

The skin on the face requires special treatment and a daily skin regime in order for the skin to look and feel its finest. There are certain things you can do to keep your skin healthy and supple. The key to having soft, smooth, clear, and glowing skin is constant and regular proactive maintenance of the face.
The first of the tips for healthy skin is to eat a good, well-balanced diet. Make sure your diet is rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits and don't forget to drink water. Water is essential to the health of your face skin. The more water you drink the better (at least 6-8 8 ounce glasses per day).
Next, make sure you cleanse your face daily, preferably at the end of the day or at night before bed. By this time, your face needs some good cleansing to get rid of all the dirt and dust that has accumulated inside your pores throughout the day. Nighttime is when your skin gets to rejuvenate itself, so cleansing before bed is critical to a healthy skin regime. If you do not cleanse regularly at night, usually people see congestion and built up in some areas of the face, and this can be avoided with regular cleansing. Click on this link for more about skin care product tips for healthy skin.
Choosing A Cleanser
When you choose a cleanser, make sure it is not too drying, especially in winter months when your skin naturally gets drier due to the cold temperature outdoors and drying heat indoors. Soaps and other stringent cleaners can suck up all the good oils in your skin, which makes your skin produce even more oil than normal. There are several good essential oil-based or lotion-based cleansers that leave your face feeling clean and refreshed, rather than tight and dry, and they don't leave an oily residue behind.
Also, it is important to exfoliate at least 1-2 times per week. This aids with skin renewal and improves your skin's elasticity. Elasticity is what makes our skin appear younger, and as we get older we lose elasticity and that youthful ability of our skin to 'bounce back' from any damage that may occur. Anything you can do to preserve your skin's youthful glow is encourage, and exfoliating is definitely one of the keys to healthy skin!
After cleansing, always use a non-stringent, acid-based toner that will remove any remaining dirt on your face.
Follow with a good moisturizer after cleansing. There are plenty of moisturizing products on the market that can be applied in the morning and nighttime in order to ensure that your skin maintains moisture 24 hours a day. My aesthetician swears by Decleor Paris (which I use), but there many others out there to choose from that have similar natural ingredients. Something with sunscreen in it for daytime is recommended to protect the skin from sun damage (if you are tanning indoors, you can purchase 'solar masks' to completely block UV from your face). Use a deep-moisturizing nighttime balm or lotion, and then eye cream for the delicate area around eyes.
Maintaining glowing, young looking skin is simple once you make it a regular routine in your life. If you follow these tips for healthy skin, you will likely see improvements over the course of several weeks. Remember that healthy skin is the combination of a well-nourished and hydrated body, along with a good daily facial cleansing and moisturizing routine.

Skin Care - 5 Tips In Banishing The Unsightly Warts

By Michael Russell

Now you see them, now you don’t. No, I’m not referring to any magic tricks but to warts! Yes, you heard me right – warts. If there is one skin condition that is shrouded with mystery, warts can definitely vie for the top spot! Warts may come and go as they please with no scientific explanation as to why or how this happens. Why warts behave this way, nobody knows for sure.
Most of us may have had a wart at one point of our lives. Warts are those rough irregular skin growths that can appear in the face, hands, forearms, feet and genital areas. The human papilloma virus, or HPV, causes warts and they can be very contagious!
All warts are not created equal. In fact, there are several kinds of warts – the common warts, the flat warts, the plantar warts and the genital warts. The common warts are rough looking and are commonly found on our hands and fingers. Flat warts are much smaller, have smoother surfaces and can be found on the hands and on the face. Plantar warts are those found on the soles of the feet while genital warts are those found on the genitals and the anal area.
Warts are so mysterious that up until now, an effective solution to end this problem is yet to be discovered! If you have these unsightly bumps troubling you at present, you only have two options in having them removed. You can either seek medical help or try a few skin care tricks at home. Read on to learn some tips in banishing those warts!
Is it really a wart? If you seriously want to remove those unsightly bumps and have a clearer and fresh-looking skin, you have to make sure that it is indeed a wart. You must know how to differentiate a wart from a mole, a corn and a callus or skin cancer. When in doubt, see your doctor. He or she may help you in establishing if it is indeed a wart.
No touching, please! As much as possible, avoid touching your warts. This is the ultimate skin care tip in case of warts. Frequent touching will only aggravate the condition. It can spread the virus all over your skin and you may even accidentally transfer it to another person. To avoid this, wash your hands immediately in hot water to prevent further contamination.
Castor oil to the rescue! Applying castor oil to the warts twice a day may help in eliminating those ugly skin imperfections. Castor oil is mildly acidic and has the power to irritate the warts. Do this continuously and your warts will disappear!
Try Vitamin C - Another great skin care tip in eliminating warts is to use vitamin C. Like castor oil, vitamin C is also mildly acidic in nature and can make those warts say goodbye to your skin for good! To explore the power of vitamin C, crush several vitamin C tablets and mix it with enough water to make a paste. Apply the resulting paste directly on the wart and cover it with a piece of clean gauze. Secure the gauze in place using several layers of tape and soon, your wart will just drop off!
Use heat to remove warts - Soaking the warts in very hot water may soften its surface and will hopefully kill the virus that lurks beneath it. However, this method can only be applied for plantar warts. Also, make sure you do not use boiling water so that you don’t accidentally burn yourself in the process.

Wasim and Waqar v England - A Collapse Every Time

By Alex Bowden

This is how we remember it: England are batting; they reach 200-0; the ball starts to reverse swing; England are all out for 210.
In reality it was never quite this simple. For one thing Pakistan often had Mushtaq Ahmed or Saqlain Mushtaq taking their fair share of wickets, but there is no denying the quality of Wasim and Waqar’s bowling.
In many ways Wasim Akram was the perfect fast bowler. He could be taller, if you were actually going for perfection, but that’s about the only thing that could be improved upon. He hid the ball on his approach to the crease and constantly surprised the batsman with his no-jump delivery stride. He swung the ball both ways with the new ball, but particularly with the old one. This he did with unparalleled accuracy. He could bowl bouncers and yorkers at will and he was very, very fast. He actually managed to snap a stump in bowling Chaminda Vaas once. That delivery was the middle of a hat trick as well. Is there anyone whose fantasies even come close to that? Oh and he was a left-armer who could bowl as effectively from over or around the wicket.
Waqar Younis was an altogether simpler bowler. He wasn’t without guile by any means but didn’t perhaps have the same ability to swing the ball both ways that Wasim had. However, Waqar had a delivery that no-one can match: The dipping, inswinging yorker delivered slightly faster than light off a turbo-charged shovel going downhill with a following wind. Er, it was fast anyway. Faster than Wasim. Even today, to have your toes broken by an inswinging yorker is to be ‘Waqared’. If you’ve got a delivery like that, you don’t need any others. The trick was in Waqar’s slightly round-armed action which meant the ball swung at an angle. As well as veering sharply towards the stumps, it also led batsmen to believe they were facing a full toss, when in fact the ball would dip towards stumps or toes.
We get really excited about Wasim and Waqar bowling. It was mysterious and exotic and deadly. No-one’s that good any more.

Greg Chappell - Sachin Controversy Roots

By Vineet Raj Kapoor

1. Greg Chappell mentions that some Senior Players of India had formed a clique/ mafia that controlled cricket and kept deserving talent out Seems much like any other sports or corporate. Has a tinge of truth in it. He possibly hinted at Sachin who has not played any great innings for a long time, and should have hanged his boots by now. Thumbs Up. That Greg didn't have this courage when he was the coach. Thumbs Down.
2. Sachin Tendulkar hits back emotionally mentioning that he's distressed at the remarks. And has reiterated that his committment to the country not be questioned. Sachin is true about his commitment to the country not being questioned. However, I as a cricket fan would also say that my committment is unquestionable - that doesn't qualify me to play. I have to perform on the stage and that's all what counts. Opps! Seems Sachin has missed this ball too. Thumbs Down.
3. Greg Chappell Resigns A combination of a few reasons or possibilities are:
The start of ICL (Indian Cricket League) may have sprung him an opportunity which he doesn't want to miss. He did hint that he'd be continuing his association with Indian Cricket. The death of Bob Woolmer. Surely, this would be an the back of his mind. The possibility of maybe coaching another international team (maybe Australia or Pakistan) Tired of inability to manage the cliques within the Indian Team. Since a large part of his success depends on his ability to keep moving people, the Rocks (Sachin, Sehwag, Dravid and Ganguly) are coming in his way!
Neutral
4. Sachin says that Juniors are encouraged in the Indian Team Anil Kumble came out in support of Sachin. However, Javagal Srinath's sharing of some earlier memories with Anil Kumble when both of them debuted make good reading. Srinath said, they were looking forward to getting a lot from the Seniors, but were disappointed, talks a lot about the Player's camarederie that Sachin talks about. Seems sad but true that there is a dog eat dog world out there. Thumbs Down.
5. The Exit of Sachin, Sehwag and all non-performing assets would spell disaster Well we thought the same when Gavaskar went. I believe there are even more talented yougsters waiting in the wings. People who have already broken Sachin and Kambli's partnership records. Boys who have scored higher than anyone earlier. And they won't take time to sink their teeth in fast. They'd have the fire burning bright inside them (fire which has been doused by achievements in Sachin, and Sehwag). Good Bye Sachin Thumbs Up.
6. Sachin has done a lot for Indian Cricket. Nowhere I am disputing Sachin's tall achievements, however we are looking at today and tommorrow. Sachin's place now is in the Hall of Fame and that's where he should go right now!
Cricket tommorrow is going to be much different. Much like hockey or football, where you remember games but can't remember the complete team which played. There would be more players and less stars in the teams which have to succeed. You need heavy rotation in players to win.
